Dec. 13, 2023: Traumatic Brain Injury Research

Hello, I hope this message finds you well. As a fellow Veteran, I am excited to reach out to you with an opportunity to help our Veteran community.

Between 2000 to 2023, there were over 485,000 reported traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in military service members.1 A TBI is a head injury resulting from a hit, blast, blow, or jolt from an external force that may lead to long-term cognitive and behavioral health challenges that affect life after military service. Both the U.S. Department of Defense and the Department of Veteran Affairs have invested heavily in the immediate care of TBIs; however, many military service members still sustain unreported and untreated TBIs, which raises concerns about the health and well-being of these Veterans.

Attached are two handouts for our research study at the Brain Injury Research Center (BIRC) of Mount Sinai which is looking at the long-term effects of TBI and repetitive head impacts on military service members. This research will help us to better understand how brain injuries impact former service members' lives and health outcomes. If you or someone you know is interested in participating in this research study, please feel free to reach out to me.

I look forward to speaking with you soon.

Best Regards,

"Show the world you're an expert in nonprofit management. NANOE Credentialing ensures you achieve your vocational goals." ~ Kathleen Robinson, Ph.D.

Certified Nonprofit Executive (CNE)

200 Multiple Choice Questions

Certified Development Executive (CDE)

150 Multiple Choice Questions

Certified Nonprofit Consultant (CNC)

100 Multiple Choice Questions

Dear Colleague in Service,

NANOE is the only nationwide membership organization in the U.S. for Executives seeking credentials in the art of nonprofit capacity-building. Practitioners who hold a prestigious NANOE credential are “best practice” experts who grow charitable enterprise and discover new ways to advance the common good. NANOE’s three capacity-building training certifications are based on industry insider knowledge, university research, and a love for serving humanity. Each credential compliments the other ensuring CEOs, CFOs, COOs & CDOs organization-wide are equipped with progressive capacity building practices that drive new growth.

Here's a brief overview of the three credentials you can receive that will supercharge your career:

CERTIFIED NONPROFIT EXECUTIVE (CNE): Striking the balance between managing volunteer board members, administrators, front-line staff, programs, finance and fundraising presents nonprofit managers with the complex and perfect storm of corporate oversight. Practitioners who hold CNE learn new ways to prioritize capacity-building that ensures they weather the tumultuous seasons of nonprofit administration. Certified Nonprofit Executives become the capacity-building expert CEOs, CFOs, COOs & CDOs a charitable enterprise needs to expand its mission!

CERTIFIED DEVELOPMENT EXECUTIVE (CDE): Many fundraisers come to the nonprofit sector with great intentions to advance a charity’s mission without having correctly answered the question, “who is our customer?” Executives mistakenly think that the rain forest, the student, the homeless or a family-in-need are their customers and therein lies the difficulty. Individuals you serve are not your customers because they have no money. Certified Development Executives are expert at understanding who their true customer is and are equipped with new best practices that ensure they create life-long partnerships with new friends who financially invest in your mission.

CERTIFIED NONPROFIT CONSULTANT (CNC): During our careers, at one point or another, many of us wonder if we could be trusted to share our expertise with others in a way that produces personal income. The truth is, successful consulting is more than sharing your experience…it’s a coveted lifestyle with multiple dimensions. First, you need to be an expert in particular area of nonprofit management. Second, you must learn how to disseminate your knowledge using the consulting arts. Third, you must build a sustainable business enterprise that consistently generates opportunities to serve. Practitioners who hold the CNC credential are nationally qualified experts who labor alongside nonprofits providing the organizations they serve “big wins!”

You'll also be pleased to know that we provide LIVE CREDENTIALING SUPPORT. NANOE's Member Relations Director Lisa Van Zyll is available Mondays through Fridays 9am to 5pm (EST) to answer any of your questions and to support you as you take your exam! Feel free to give her a ring at (202) 309-4125.

e. Pass/Fail status is revealed immediately upon test completion

Sept 18, 2020: VA's Free Apple iPad Program for Telehealth Veterans:

The Department of Veterans Affairs recently announced a new collaboration with Apple to increase veterans' access to virtual care benefits by providing free iPads to some vets.

The VA program gives qualifying veterans cellular-enabled iPads to access telehealth services; it currently helps more than 50,000 vets across the country virtually connect to VA health care services. It has recently been expanded as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you are a veteran enrolled in VA health care, don't have internet access or a video device, and are interested in the program, you should consult your VA health care team to see whether you're eligible for the program.

The iPads let veterans participate in video appointments with their care team, and enable secure communication between the veteran and VA medical staff. Besides offering secure video communication, the iPads let veterans securely view and download their personal medical data using the Health Records on iPhone feature from Apple; view their health record; refill prescriptions; track their health and more. Veterans can safely meet with their care team without having to visit a VA medical center, use public transportation or possibly be exposed to health hazards.

"VA will continue working diligently to provide veterans with the tools and resources necessary to access quality health care when and where they need it," said VA Secretary Robert Wilkie. "VA's partnership with Apple is an integral step in helping to bridge the digital divide for veterans everywhere. This is particularly critical during the COVID-19 public health emergency, when telehealth is being leveraged to protect the safety and well-being of both our veterans and clinicians."

The program has been in existence since 2016, and a recent VA study found that veterans who received the free iPads reported high levels of satisfaction with care, were less likely to miss appointments, and found it easier and more convenient to access VA care.

Contact your local or regional VA healthcare team or primary care physician to inquire about how to sign up or call (800) 827-1000 for further information.

Community Resource Day Program

Tuesday 3 August 2021:

Black Owned Business Month

August, 2021:

Dear small business community,

August is Black Business Month, a month for uplifting and supporting Black-owned businesses. While the Black community currently makes up 22% of New York City's population (1.9 million), just 3.5% of NYC businesses are owned by Black entrepreneurs. And during the pandemic, Black-owned businesses in New York City were twice as likely to be closed during the pandemic than their white counterparts, and only received about 12% of the PPP funding they asked for.

But we know that Black-owned businesses are essential to the fabric of NYC, and they help define the character and feel of a community and enhance the identity of our economic makeup. We also know that there is tremendous potential for more Black-owned businesses to start and grow.

That’s why we started BE NYC, a first-of-its-kind model in any major American city, to actively address this disparity and build generational wealth in the Black community. Advancing Black Entrepreneurship in NYC is the blueprint for this initiative, focusing on equitable access to financing, strengthening connections within the City’s Black entrepreneurial community, and scaling Black businesses for long-term success.

We know that entrepreneurship is the most viable solution to address the racial wealth gap. Over the last year, we’ve ramped up our BE NYC programming, from mentorship and networking opportunities to our Juneteenth event, the “Five Borough Black Business Forum: The Future Starts Here.” Since September 2020, over 1800 entrepreneurs have attended BE NYC workshops, mentorship events, and networking opportunities.

This August and beyond, we will continue to honor our commitment to equity of opportunity. This means balancing our economic scales in a way that thoughtfully cultivates the many talents and needs of a historically diverse population, so that everyone can participate. New York City does this best when we work together.

We encourage you to support Black-owned businesses this August and year-round. Visit nyc.gov/shopyourcity to find local Black-owned businesses in your neighborhood.

If you’re a Black entrepreneur, we hope you’ll join us at an upcoming BE NYC event. Visit nyc.gov/benyc to learn more.

Sincerely,

Commissioner Doris
